Shooting the Milky Way over a waterfall has been a long held dream of mine but for many reasons, over the years, this shot remained unfulfilled — that is, until the day I hiked to Elk River Falls in the North Carolina Mountains on a recce. Not only was there a good sized opening over the waterfall but it also faced the proper direction so that the Milky Way lined up over the waterfall’s opening perfectly. Then came the waiting game.

From that hike, it took over a year for weather conditions and the logistics to drive the four hours to capture this shot, to fall into place. The presence of campers at the spot was an unexpected surprise but one must learn to accept the opportunities you’re given and to recognize the glow of living life on the edge.
